Syllabus:Introduction to palaeontology and stratigraphic principles. Rock deformation and metamorphism. Ore deposits. Laboratory and field study of fossils, metamorphic rocks, minerals and ores. Interpretation of 3D geological structures.
 
Unit Outcomes: Understanding of the fossilization process. Familiarity with the taxonomy and evolutionary development of the major fossil groups. Understanding of basic stratigraphic principles and methods. Knowledge of the various ways in which rocks of the earth'scrust undergo deformation and metamorphism. Practice in the use of block diagrams and cross-sections to represent rock structures in 3D. Proficiency in hand-specimen identification, description and classification of metamorphic rocks and minerals. Proficiency in the use of compass and clinometer to measure and record planar and linear rock structures in the field. Understanding of the processes leading to the formation of economic ore deposits.
