Syllabus:

Introduction to geology. Origin, composition and structure of the earth. Internal and external earth processes. Plate tectonics. Basic rock relationships and the geological time-scale. Geological map interpretation. Laboratory and field study of crystals, minerals, igneous and sedimentary rocks.
 

Unit Outcomes:

Knowledge of both classical concepts in geology and modern theories of the origin, composition, structure and tectonics of the earth. Knowledge of the geological time-scale and of how rocks are dated. Ability to read and interpret geological data presented in maps, sections and bore hole logs. Understanding of the nature of crystalline solids. Ability to classify crystals according to their symmetry. Familiarity with the common rock-forming mineral groups. Practical skill in identifying minerals bytheir diagnostic physical properties. Understanding of the internal processes leading to magma generation, volcanism and the formation of igneous rocks. Understanding of the surficial processes leading to weathering, erosion, soil formation, transportation and deposition of sediments. Knowledge of sedimentary processes, lithification and diagenesis. Proficiency in the identification, description and classification of igneous and sedimentary rocks in hand specimen and in the field. Appreciation of the local geology of the Perth region.
