Introduction
This course provides a broad research foundation to enable scholarly research which will advance nursing theory and have the capacity to guide practice. The course is a collaborative program between King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH), WesternAustralia and the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A currently Registered Nurse who has registration with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, holds a nursing degree or equivalent and has two years post-registration clinical experience with a minimum of 52 weeks continuous practice in an acute care setting, be accepted by King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Prior to commencement of the course, applicants are required to complete an orientation program of up to 16 weeks in Special Care Nursery at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. Applicants with a degree from an appropriate discipline, where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient, will be required to undertake elected units prior to commencing the course. Evidence of successfulcompletion of appropriate research units is also a course prerequisite.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Students who have successfully completed the hospital based component will receive recognition of prior learning or exemption for the unit Nursing 553-Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or two years part-time study. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for part-time study.

Course Organisation
Students complete the advanced nursing pratice component of this course within an approved hospital or agency course.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
