Course Overview

Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.


The course addresses the needs of a professional engineer in pursuing a higher degree by recognising both their experience and time constraints. The research component of a traditional masters degree has been replaced by industry based project work which the student can tie in with their work commitments.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.



Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.


Specifically, applicants require a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) or equivalent degree majoring in Electrical Power. In addition, proof of employment associated with the power industry or at least one year's experience in the power industry is required if not currently employed.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Credit for recognised learning not exceeding two-thirds of the required credits, may be granted to a student transferring from another program at a recognised institution, with satisfactory completion of equivalent coursework and/or proof of professional training or substantial work experience gained in industry.

Course Organisation

Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.


Students attend course topics, intensive block programs, and resource-based learning through distance education mode.



Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and August.
