Syllabus: This unit on selected topics in electrical utility engineering consists of three modules. The contents are mostly delivered by industry experts to educate the students with real world applications of the theories. Module 1 is on concepts of the electricity industry deregulation and restructuring including independence power producers, generators, distributors and transmission systems; transmission after access and wheeling; ancillary services; bidding strategies in the new market; reliability and risk management;, planning in the new deregulated environment; choice of service, energy exchanges and settlement services; retail providers, electricity pricing and metering; emerging technology. Module 2 is on HV cables including cable design and commissioning; cable types; electrostatic stresses in single core cables; multicore cables; low voltage cables; cable current carrying capacity; grading of cable insulation; electrical characteristics of cables; cable thermal models; capacity calculations; cable testings; and fault finding techniques. Module 3 is on concepts of project management including engineering project management fundamentals; life cycle; project evaluation and risks; contingency; budget; depreciation; return on investments; and economic feasibility.
