Extractive metallurgy is a specialist field that deals with the extraction of metals and mineral products from their ores through the application of scientific principles. Extractive metallurgists play a key role in the mining industry. They are responsible for the development of the best process to treat a particular ore and the efficient operation of the processing plant to convert the ore into metal and other products, as well the disposal of wastes in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Students with an interest in chemistry and mathematics and the desire to pursue a rewarding career in the mining industry often make a successful extractive metallurgist.

The Extractive Metallurgy major requires essential WACE courses and Mathematics 3A/3B and WACE Physics 3A/3B or WACE Chemistry 3A/3B.

A graduate of this course can:
1. apply minerals and metallurgical scientific and principles to metallurgical process operation
2. thinking critically and creatively to generate innovative solutions and apply logical an rational processes to analyse minerals and metallurgical technology practice
3. access, evaluate and synthesise minerals and metallurgical information from multiple sources
4. communicate in ways appropriate to the discipline of minerals engineering and metallurgy
5. use and apply technologies, recognising their advantages and limitations, when applied to minerals and metallurgical information
6. demonstrate responsibility and self-learning skills by applying critical reflection and being proactive
7. describe and apply international best practice standards in minerals engineering and metallurgical methods and technologies
8. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity in professional life
9. work ethically and professionally, both within a team and independently
Duration and Availability
This major is available to international students studying in Australia on a study visa. Two intakes are offered each year for domestic students, in February and July, but because availability of some units is limited to specific semesters those students commencing mid-year might need to study part-time for one or more semesters and usually will not be able to complete the major within the expected time to complete. There is February intake only for International students. The first year of this course is only offered at the Bentley campus Second year is available at both the Bentley or Kalgoorlie Campuses. Third year is only available at the Kalgoorlie Campus. For more information, please contact the WA School of Mines for enrolment assistance.
