| Syllabus: | This unit will provide a short review of basic ferrous metallurgy, general materials specifications and certification, with a further analysis of Alloy Steel and Tool Steel. Stainless Steels (SS) will be covered including the different classifications, properties and applications of this group. In addition, the evolution of High Nickel Alloys (HNA) from the established SS showing the metallurgical characteristics, properties and the applications in more severe environments and functions. The functional requirements of Superalloys, specifically for creep resistance will be demonstrated. An overview of Cobalt based alloys with an emphasis on tribological properties will be given. Surface Conditioning and Hardening processes for steels will be summarised and Failure and Defect Analysis using case studies will be undertaken. The next part of the unit deals with non-metals, namely Polymeric Materials, Ceramics and Glasses and the development of Composite Materials. The analysis will cover specifications and standards, and mechanical behaviour. The final part of the unit will cover the technology and applications of Smart Materials. General Materials Selection and Design and criteria will be considered throughout the unit with the inclusion of case studies. |
