| Syllabus: | This unit is an introduction to the biology of infectious disease and the immune system, particularly as it applies to the practice of Pharmacy, and covers the fundamentals of Microbiology and Immunology, as well as a comprehensive coverage of the medically important infectious diseases. The unit explores the structure and nature of microorganisms with an emphasis on bacteriology, including the identification of common medically important bacteria. Virology and eukaryotic microorganisms are also covered including fungi and protozoa. Through this unit of learning you will also gain knowledge in the structure and function of the immune system with an emphasis on the major innate and adaptive immune mechanisms and how these interact to create an effective defence system against pathogenic microorganisms: both in stopping infection and removal of infectious agents. You will also acquire understanding of the mechanisms of hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and tissue rejection. The causative agents of major diseases are dealt with from a body systems perspective, with a focus on their disease-causing properties that enable them to invade tissues and evade immune defences. These include, but are not limited to, the respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract diseases, the skin and central nervous system diseases, urinary and sexually transmitted infections, vector-borne and emerging infectious diseases. We investigate the role of vaccination in the prevention and control of disease as well as the vaccines which are currently recommended by national and state vaccination schedules. |
