| Syllabus: | This unit introduces the concepts of geological exploration metallurgy and mining engineering for non-engineering and science graduates. The sustainable mining cycle from greenfield exploration, through feasibility and production and onto closure and relinquishment of the mining leases and returning the operational area back to its original use under the principles of sustainable development. Topics covered will include health and safety considerations in exploration, metallurgy and mining activities, basic geological principles and concepts, role of the geologist, orebody identification and classification, role of the metallurgist, processing stages that follow discovery and evaluation, role of the mining engineer, orebody evaluation and modelling, ore reserve estimation, open pit mine design, production scheduling, equipment selection, underground mine methods, geotechnical issues, rock breakage, mineral processing methods to provide a marketable product, tailings, mine closure, rehabilitation and relinquishing the mining lease. |
| Further Information: | This unit includes an intensive five-day session of classroom and field activities in Kalgoorlie. Please note that submission of the Independent Research Report is scheduled five days after the completion of the fifth day of the program. |
