UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline.
Syllabus: This unit is designed for students who have passed WACE Chemistry 3A/3B or equivalent. If you have not previously studied chemistry, you should take Introduction to Chemistry 180. This unit will provide you with skills in chemistry of relevance to biological systems. It will provide you with an understanding of chemical bonding, enabling prediction of properties within matter. It will strengthen your skills in chemical reactions and numeracy. This unit introduces some chemical measurement techniques of relevance to biological systems. It will illustrate the role of functional groups in controlling the function, behaviour and reactivity of organic molecules, focusing on application to biological molecules. The importance of solution pH in many biological systems will be addressed, along with the properties of acid and buffer solutions.
