This major provides a foundation in the core principles of economics as well as intermediate units in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and economic policy. Students will gain an understanding of economic relationships and the tools of analysis to understand today’s economic problems. It will appeal to graduate students who are working in areas of applied economics and is particularly suitable for careers in private business, the public sector, teaching, banking and consulting.

Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:

A graduate of this course can:
1. understand the theoretical underpinnings of economics; apply economic principles and theory in researching and analysing contemporary economic issues and in assessing the impact of economic policy choices on domestic and foreign economies.
2. examine economic issues in a logical and rational way; identify and evaluate economic concepts and methodology to formalise and structure problems; think creatively and reflectively to identify appropriate solutions to economic problems.
3. access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from a range of sources appropriate in economic analysis; critically analyse journal articles, case study materials and other documents.
4. communicate effectively and professionally in a range of media, choosing schemes and types of data that are appropriate for the issues being discussed and the audience.
5. compare and discriminate between available technologies; identify and expertly apply new and established technologies to the identification and investigation of economic issues.
6. show an awareness of current developments in multiple fields of economics; acquire strategies for the integration of such developments into the body of knowledge; reflect critically upon any implications for applied economic analysis.
7. recognise and critically evaluate the implications and potential impact of developments in the global economy, including changing trade relationships and international organisations.
8. show an understanding of cultural diversity, and be able to communicate effectively from an economic perspective within diverse cultural environments.
9. work independently and collaboratively, complying with appropriate legislation and protocols, towards the understanding and solution of a range of economic issues in a professional and ethical manner.
