The concept of microbial taxonomy and phylogeny of these organisms will also be discussed. A series of practical laboratory sessions will be used to demonstrate methods in the identification of microorganisms using techniques such as microscopy. Genetics of bacteria, antibiotic resistance and infection assays with oomycetes and fungi will also be demonstrated. In addition, the practical component aims to demonstrate the use of molecular biology in agriculture. Transposon mutagenesis and plant genetic modification via agroinfection are some examples of molecular biology application. Upon the completion of the unit, students will be highly familiar with current crop protection strategies against biotic factors.
