Syllabus: | This unit introduces the physical principles of optical,infra-red and acoustic remote sensing, focussing on applications of marine and terrestrial environmental monitoring. Numerical models of radiative transfer are explained. The spectral nature of the scenes being observed by remote sensing techniques will be analysed with respect to the radiative transfer models, leading to examples of remote sensing algorithms which are applied to raw data to infer geophysical properties of the natural environment. The physics of acoustic propagation in the ocean are described, and are applied to passive and active techniques for remotely sensing the ocean environment. Practical sessions explore properties of terrestrial and marine targets, and provide an assessment of the natural variability of targets and propagation conditions, land their effects on derived environmental outputs. |
Unit references, texts, outcomes and assessment details | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
