Introduction

This course is designed to provide specialist training at an introductory level in clinical classification. Graduates of this course are qualified to seek employment as a clinical coder.

Course Entry Requirements

A bachelor degree or equivalent and proof of formal medical terminology training is required. In certain cases, relevant work experience may be recognised.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should hold a certificate or training in medical terminology and academic writing.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is available in both internal and external (online) study modes and is of one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study. Where possible, classes will be scheduled in the evening to accommodate students already employed. This course is also available to international offshore students. International onshore students on student visas are not permitted to study this course externally (online).

Course Organisation

This course is designed to provide specialist training at an introductory level in clinical classification. In addition to the introductory coding unit, students will gain a fundamental understanding of health data and information, health information systems and data analysis in health through ancillary units. The units include foundations of health information, introduction to health informatics, clinical classifications and health data and information analysis. These units and the introductory coding unit ensure students have a grounded understanding of the relevance and importance of coded data, and aim to improve employability after graduation. The course also includes a number of practical experiences to ensure students are comfortable with data extraction and using real health records.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course are qualified to seek employment as a clinical coder.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. In particular students will be required to purchase the NCCC International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) and the HIMAA Introductory textbook.
