Introduction

This course enhances professional career development, preparing nurses for advanced clinical practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Nursing theory and research as well as professional role development are an integral part of the course, which is focused on the development of the multiple roles of the clinical expert through studies in specialist and advanced practice role development. Fundamental to this course is the development of leadership, critical thinking and clinical decision making capacity, preparing health professionals for a leadership role at an executive level. The Primary Health Care and Community Nursing Stream prepares registered nurses for a leadership role in primary care and community nursing and focuses on professional accountability and the development of competency at an advanced level in assessment and clinical judgement skills.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree in nursing or equivalent with a course-weighted average (CWA) of at least 70 per cent or a postgraduate diploma in nursing or equivalent with a CWA of at least 65 per cent, plus registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) (Bentley location) or the Singapore Nurses Board (Singapore location), with a minimum of one year post-registration clinical experience. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is an additional course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references and an interview.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is of three semesters full-time duration or equivalent part-time.

Course Organisation

This course will enhance the students’ professional career development, preparing them for advanced clinical practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Nursing theory and research, as well as professional role development, are integral to this course which focuses on the development of the multiple roles of the clinical expert. Students will complete either a specialist stream in child and adolescent health nursing, primary health care and community nursing or general nursing. All streams focus on the development of leadership, critical thinking and clinical decision making. All streams also incorporate an individual health project which students will complete, during the master component of the course, under the guidance of one of Curtin’s experienced staff.
