Syllabus: | Kinetics: Rate of reactions and rate equations, Zero, first and second order kinetics, The Isolation Method, Activation energy and the Arrhenius equation, mechanisms, Steady state approximation, Collision theory and transition state theory. Energetics and thermodynamics: systems and properties, Energy, temperature and heat, Enthalpy and the first Law, Entropy and the Second Law, the Third Law, Free energy, Equilibrium and Chemical Potential. Heterogeneous processes: surfaces, Adsorption and adsorption isotherms, rate of reaction - activation limited and mass transport limited. |
