| Syllabus: | An introduction to the main technologies and techniques currently used for mineral processing in the mining industry. Students will gain a conceptual understanding of mineral processing by applying various terms and principles to extractive metallurgical processes, and will learn about the key role that mineral processing plays in the mining value chain and how mining practices can impact on processing outcomes. They will be introduced to three overarching processes: the comminution and liberation of minerals; the separation of minerals; and, the extraction of metals, including emerging approaches, technologies and digital applications in these areas. The unit will enable students to specify appropriate methods for processing a variety of ore types, as well as the relevant underlying phenomena involved. Sustainability issues will be examined, ranging from energy consumption to environment considerations, and safety risks associated with mining processing operations, as well as factors impacting efficiency and cost of the processing system. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their academic and professional communication skills through exposure to, and application of, terms and principles relevant to extractive metallurgical processes. |
