| Syllabus: | The National Competency Standards for the Midwife inform the scope and purpose of this unit. Students undertake midwifery clinical practice. This unit explores the historical and political context of midwifery practice. Learning experiences for the beginning midwife highlight legal and ethical midwifery practice, evidenced-informed knowledge and contemporary midwife philosophies. Learning experiences include identification of deviation from normal, including fetal assessment and neonatal resuscitation. The unit develops students’ capabilities as beginning midwives with skills for: consumer advocacy and partnership, childbirth education, health maintenance and promotion strategies for childbearing women. Breastfeeding, early parenting as well as assessment and care of the newborn are important components of this unit. This unit includes experience in woman-centred care as part of midwifery continuity of care with individual women through pregnancy, labour and birth and the postnatal period. |
