Syllabus: | The course is divided into three segments: Earth, Oceans and Atmosphere. Earth: overview of scientific method; the Big Bang and nucleosynthesis of the elements in stars; formulation of planet Earth and Earth-Moon system; differentiation of crust, mantle and core; early and modern tectonic processes. Oceans: dimensions and shapes of the oceans; spatial variations in water properties; ocean circulation; water, salt and heat budgets; tides and waves; coastal processes; the evolution of the oceans; human impacts. Atmosphere: formation, structure and evolution of the atmosphere, meteorology, climate change, human impacts. |
