Syllabus: | The role of metals in life. Coordination chemistry in biological (aqueous) environments. Structure and function of enzymes containing heavy metals. Enzymatic reactions involving metal centres: carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase. Iron-based proteins (hemoglobin and myoglobin) and oxygen transport. Mitochondrial respiration: redox chemistry of iron complexes in cytochromes. Principles of molecular recognition; chemical sensor design and applications; Bioelectrochemistry. Biosurfaces. Agricultural chemicals: plant growth regulators, defoliants and dessicants; pesticides. Laboratory experiments related to the biological chemistry topics in the unit. |
