Introduction
This specialised research course provides a broad foundation for scholarly research to advance nursing theory and guide practice and also provides the foundation for further doctoral studies.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Requirement to be currently registered nurses, or eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, with a bachelor degree in nursing or in a related discipline and have a minimum of one year post-registration clinical experience. Applicants with a postgraduate diploma, relevant honours degree, or equivalent qualifications and experience are eligible for entry. Those with a degree from a discipline where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient are required to undertake selected units prior to course commencement. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is an additional course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references and an interview. Overseas applicants must have completed a bachelor degree in nursing or a nursing program of three years or more leading to registration, be currently registered in their own country and provide certified documentation to that effect. They must also meet the University's usual entry requirements.
Duration and Availability
The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Course Organisation
This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Director, Postgraduate Studies, School of Nursing and Midwifery. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
Special Note
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission. Overseas applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English. If necessary, on acceptance into the course, overseas students are advised of the requirements for provisional registration by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
