Syllabus: | Introduction to nanoparticles and quantum size effects; Electron density, wavefunctions and the Schrodinger equation; Quantum confinement and the particle in a box; Practical quantum mechanics - semi-empirical methods; Practical quantum mechanics - ab initio methods; Introduction to molecular electronics and nano-devices; Charged interfaces: Electrical double layer.;Stern layer; Classification of colloidal systems and structural characteristics, lyophilic and lyophobic colloids; Kinetics and Optical properties. Brownian Motion and Translational Diffusion; Colloid Stability: Lyophobic sols, DLVO Theory; Flocculation and Coagulation; Electrokinetic Phenomena; Synthesis of uniform particles - General principles and examples; Methods of synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles; Particle size analysis; Nanoparticle toxicology; History of fullerence discovery;methods of synthesis; characterisation, properties and application sin nanotechnology.
