Introduction

This degree provides a culturally appropriate pathway for Indigenous students who wish to teach in the primary education sector. The degree, with a focus on regional and remote teaching and learning, provides quality teacher training in curriculum planning and professional teaching practice. Practical classroom experience forms a significant part of the degree. Delivery through the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in block release mode considers family and cultural responsibilities, and allows students working in schools to continue to be employed in whilst studying. The degree will equip graduates to work between their Indigenous culture and the culture of any school in which they are employed. Successful completion of the degree allows graduates to apply to the Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT) for registration as a teacher, a prerequisite for employment in any school.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Available only to applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Standard University entry requirements or successful completion of the Curtin Aboriginal Bridging Course. Applicants with significant work experience who have completed a Certificate IV Teacher Assistant or equivalent will be considered on the basis of alternative entry pathways. Alternative pathways are available for mature age students.

Specific Requirements

Applicants will be required to submit a recent Police Clearance and Working with Children Check prior to undertaking professional practice placements. The Department of Education requires all primary education students to pass a literacy and numeracy competency test in the first year of the degree. These tests comprise of spelling, essay writing, and knowledge of mathematics content appropriate to primary aged children.

Note

Applicants will be assessed on an individual basis at a Selection Workshop and interview. Applicants are required to demonstrate the ability and commitment to undertake the course. Literacy and numeracy skills are an important prerequisite to teaching and students are required to demonstrate competence, however, additional support will be provided to speakers of English as a second language. Work experience in the education area is an advantage.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Application can be made on the basis of work experience, general and professional education or relevant qualifications.

4 years' full-time study in block mode or equivalent part-time

Career Opportunities

Graduates are qualified to seek employment in the state and independent systems of education. Some also seek employment in alternative settings and related industries.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
