Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas:
4 Years
STAT is not accepted for mature age entry but may be used to demonstrate English Competence requirements.
4 years on semester basis, at Bentley Campus only.
The course over four years, will provide a background of general engineering in the first year (Engineers Foundation Year). Then the second year will present issues involving fluid flow through reservoirs, understanding basic geology and where petroleum engineering fits. Concepts in chemical engineering and thermodynamics are addressed to ensure the student understands the issues of fluid movement as a result of changes in reservoir pressure, temperature, and flow of different liquids. Fluid dynamics andhow we understand the oil and gas reservoir are studied, ranging from microbial to macro scale. Crude oil processing and transport is addressed, followed by understanding drilling, well engineering and using methods to better image the reservoirs in 3D while determining optimum plans to extract the liquids. Finally, the economics, risk and project management topics introduce the student in the final year to global economic trends and issues to do with extracting more oil and gas for the good of the community and to assist company profit margins. Lectures will be accompanied by fluid and reservoir rock laboratories, geodynamic lab work and field trips to both service company offices and drilling sites where they are sufficiently close to campus.
It is expected that the course will be accredited by Institute of Engineers Australia to allow graduates to become professional engineers.
We are running out of oil and gas. Irrespective of booms or busts, there is always a strong market for upstream petroleum engineers. Reservoirs only produce 30% of their oil so petroleum engineers have to develop methods to increase the oil and gas production and as it reduces globally, so more engineers are needed. Today the world consumes 85 Million barrels per day, but in 20 years time we need more engineers to make sure we can get more out of the reservoirs, just to keep up with consumption. The world needs energy and that means more petroleum engineers.
