Syllabus: A comparative perspective on economic growth and social transformation is offered in this unit, with special emphasis on China, India and Japan. The unit explains the diverse paths of Asian countries to modernity, and topics include: Asian perspectives of economic development, state-led market economies, state power and political cultures, civil society and government policies, sustainable development and social movements, public opinion in environmental debates, historical issues and regional tension inAsia; the impact of nationalism, regionalism and globalisation on inter-state conflict; and regional integration in the Asian 21st century.
