Syllabus: Cellular physiology including cell membrane structure and composition. Active and passive mechanisms of membrane transport. Membrane potential. Movement of water and solutes across epithelia. Cellular metabolism. Nerve/muscle: action potentials, neuromuscular transmission, pacemaker cells in heart and smooth muscle, autonomic nervous system function, skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle. Structure to function. Digestive tract motility. Secretion and absorption: cellular mechanisms of absorption the small intestine, kidney and gallbladder. Mechanisms of secretion: salivary, pancreatic and stomach glands and kidney. Cell communication and chemical signalling. Receptors and signal transduction and intracellular messengers. Chemistry, structure and synthesis of hormones. Principles of endocrinology. Hypothalamic/pituitary interactions. Thyroid and parathyroid hormones. Adrenal hormones. LH and FSH regulation of reproduction. Reproductive hormones. Gastro-intestinal hormones. Energy metabolism: fuel homeostasis and metabolic rate, total body energy balance, endocrine control during absorptive and post-absorptive states, and temperature regulation.
