Syllabus (HB): | The unit introduces the significant idea that all accounts of the past are mediated representationally through the specific concerns of the period in which they are produced. Students gain an understanding of the ways in which representations of the pastdemonstrate the investments and anxieties of the present. The following key concepts will be explored: Essentialism v Constructivism; Politics of representation; Social construction of reality; Reader positioning and textual consumption; History as a contextually situated account of events. |
