Syllabus: Public librarianship in modern society. Critical analysis of the trends and issues facing public libraries in the 21st century. An examination of the history, philosophy and theory of public librarianship. Management of services and collections of popular literature and reference material in public libraries. Investigation of the techniques required to meet the needs of ethnically diverse communities of all ages, backgrounds and interests. Exploration of national and international standards, technologies and government policies to ensure the quality of service operations. Promotion of a strong professional and personal commitment to public librarianship. Students are able to develop a project in a specific facet of public librarianship, such as services to older adults, youth services, reader services, popular literature, or electronic access to collections.
