Syllabus: Work, economy and the transformation of the natural world. Embeddedness of work and economy in kin, gendered, ethnic, class and political relations. Cultural constructions of labour, capital, exchange, and market. New forms of global production. Ethnic and regional capitalisms. Local knowledge. Cross-cultural case studies in relation to India, Malaysia, China and Australia. This unit can be taken in both the Anthropology and History discipline majors.
