Syllabus: The impact of modern linguistics on the theory and practice of language transfer will be discussed with an emphasis on the cross-cultural aspects of achieving equivalence when translating and interpreting. Through exploring areas in which modern linguistic theory can inform the decisions that translators and interpreters make in the course of performing their work, this unit also provides an academic framework for the training of professional translators and interpreters.
