Syllabus: Introduction to mechanics of materials. Stresses and strains of deformable bodies, axially loaded structural members, torsional deformation of a circular bar, shear force and bending moment diagrams. Euler beam theory, bending stress and shear stress in beam structures, second moment of area of plane areas and analysis of stress and strain using Mohr's circle. Applications of plane stress - pressure vessels, beams and combined loadings, determination of deflections of beams using the integration methods and moment-area method.
