Syllabus: Engineering design, flowsheet, process and instrument diagrams. Materials selection and applications (also ASTM standards). Piping systems: fluid flow/pipe friction, mechanical design of piping systems. Valves. Prime movers. Seals and bearings. Pressure vessels. Foundation and structural design. Equipment design: rules of thumb, preliminary sizing, scale-up and mixing. Utilities: steam systems, water, instrument air, vacuum, plant gases and refrigeration systems. Supply systems considerations, and design and utility specifications. Electrical power utility systems. Power factor and power calculations. Introduction to electromagnetism. Transformers, single and three-phase. Rotating magnetic fields, three-phase machines. Single-phase motors. Electric motors and plant equipment. Electrical machines, starting, safety, transients. Emergency power supplies.
