Introduction

This course aims to prepare participants for advanced practice in the field of diabetes education by developing the necessary knowledge and skills to be a scholar, leader, researcher and change agent in diabetes management. The curriculum is flexible to accommodate the individual needs of participants. An extensive review of literature and development of a research proposal or project in a diabetes related field will be undertaken.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A demonstrated high academic performance at undergraduate or postgraduate level from a recognised institution. Registered nurses without a bachelor degree may gain entry to the course through an alternative mode of entry, on consideration of the applicant's current clinical and educational experience and professional development. Applicants must also have current clinical based health discipline specific registration, where appropriate, to undertake clinical based units.

Specific Requirements

Applicants studying Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542 should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening and Clearance Section of this publication.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is assessed on an individual basis based on previous completion of approved tertiary studies and related work experience. Applicants currently credentialed as a diabetes educator with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association should apply for recognition of prior learning in Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542. The first 100 credits of this program will be granted as RPL if applicants have completed the Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education according to University policy. Thus international students granted credit for the Graduate Certificate will be able to study in Australia to complete the remaining 200 credits of the course over two semesters (1 year duration).

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

This course is available externally, although some units may be available internally. Students are required to use the Internet to support their studies. Students are required to participate in clinical practice (two x 10 days) as part of the units, Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542. Part-time students will need to complete the other units listed in the first year of the program prior to undertaking the Health Contract 590 or Health Project Preparation 591. Full time students are requiredto study both Health Project 691 and 692 in the final semester.

Professional Recognition

Components of this course have Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Accreditation, 2003-2008. Graduates will be able to use evidence of completion of some components of this course as evidence to support an application for credentialing with ADEA.

Career Opportunities

Graduates generally find employment within the speciality of diabetes. There may also be opportunities to specialise as a Diabetes Educator.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
