Introduction

This research course consists of supervised research on topics relating to the discipline of interior architecture and/or design in accordance with University guidelines and regulations for higher degrees by research. The course provides an opportunity for interior architects and designers, educationists and professionals in other related areas to develop research skills and knowledge to carry out interior architecture and design research. Knowledge in the field is advanced through independent investigation or the examination of a hypothesis and the development and presentation of a thesis or creative project. Interior architecture and interior design is an activity requiring highly developed critical and analytical thinking and conceptual and communication skills. This course focuses on those critical faculties and the creative synthesis of independent work or experimentation in producing a contribution to knowledge that is well grounded in findings from a research activity.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A Bachelor of Arts (Interior Design or Interior Architecture) (Honours) with first or upper or lower second-class honours or a Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Design) with distinction, or a Bachelor of Arts (Interior Design) pass, or a Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Design) pass, and three years relevant practical experience plus full membership of a relevant design body, an approved allied qualification in a field such as architecture, engineering, or design, together with a first or upper or lower second-class honours level degree. Applicants without formal research experience may be required to undertake a bridging unit prior to course commencement. Applicants from disciplines other than interior architecture/design may be required to undertake relevant preparatory units prior to submission of candidacy.

Duration and Availability

The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture. Students without prior studies in research methodsand statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This may increase the stated course duration.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Special Note

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research degree to receive a related postgraduate diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
