Environmental health is concerned with those factors in the environment that exert a harmful effect on health and quality of life. Public concern regarding the quality of the environment has led to a demand for professionally trained personnel to plan and implement prevention, management and control programs and to administer statutory provisions. This course combines the scientific, technical and humanitarian skills required to be competent professionals in the field of environmental health.
None. One TEE Science subject and one TEE Maths subject desirable.
STAT elements considered are E and Q.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Most units in the first year of the course are also available in an external mode, making this course suitable for those students from remote areas who wish to study off campus.
This course offers a broad science base incorporating units in microbiology, human biology, chemistry and physics leading to specialised environmental health units including food science, safety and hygiene, environmental systems, water and air pollution, waste management, epidemiology and communicable diseases, environmental noise and law. In addition to traditional lectures, laboratory and fieldwork, students attend professional placements and tutorials with environmental health practitioners during the second and third years of the course. Students must also complete a mandatory one week full-time work experience placement with an approved country or remote regional training agency during the semester break immediately following the completion of fivesemesters of study. Several Local Government Authorities offer cadetships (on application) to selected students so that they are able to complete their professional placement requirements and also earn an income while they undertake their study.
The course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Environmental Health and the Western Australian Environmental Health Officers Professional Review Board. Graduates are eligible for appointment as Environmental Health Officers throughout all statesof Australia and are also eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Environmental Health.
There is a continuing high demand for graduates, with the majority being employed by Local Government Authorities as well as State and Federal Government departments as Environmental Health Officers or Scientific Officers. There is also an increasing demand for graduates to work in diverse fields such as the resources sector and the food industry.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
