The Master of Urban Design is a collaborative award offered by Curtin University of Technology and the University of Western Australia, through the Urban Design Centre of Western Australia. The course is designed for graduates of architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a related field seeking to supplement prior education with a specific orientation to the aims and means of urban design. The course is designed to build knowledge about urban design and urban development processes (with a focus on the Australian and South-East Asian contexts), improve techniques of urban analysis, design and community engagement, and strengthen interdisciplinary approaches and the coordination of architectural, landscape and planning objectives in urban development.
Applicants must hold a bachelor degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a related field from a recognised tertiary institution. Applicants who have completed the Graduate Diploma in Urban Design with a course weighted average of 60 per cent are eligible to apply. Applicants from a non-design background will be required to show evidence of design and graphics skills through submission of a portfolio or may be required to complete preliminary units to acquire adequate design skills.
Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis.
The course duration is two years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course are:
Graduate Certificate in Urban Design, Graduate Diploma in Urban Design.
The main activity of the course takes place in the design studio, where students have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and instruction in specific technical areas of urban design to current projects, engaging with government agencies and community groups to develop practical solutions to significant design and development challenges. Optional units ensure that all students gain an understanding and appreciation of the central disciplines of urban design: architecture, planning and landscapearchitecture.
The principal employment destinations for graduates will be state and local government planning departments and private consulting practices.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
