Introduction

The Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing (Registration) is a co-operative program with Murdoch University to prepare registered general nurses and comprehensive nurses for registration as mental health nurses. Key elements of the curriculum are professional accountability, evidenced-based practice, increased knowledge and skills in the area of mental health and competence to practice as a mental health nurse.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Applicants must be registered in Division I with the Nurses Board in a state of Australia as a comprehensive or general nurse with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), or its equivalent. Alternate entry will be offered to general nurses and comprehensive nurses registered in Division I with the Nurses Board of Western Australia who do not hold an undergraduate degree. Non-degree students must meet the School of Nursing and Midwifery's criteria for alternate entry.

Specific Requirements

Students require a Police Clearance before commencing the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is one year full time duration or equivalent part time.

Course Organisation

Students complete three units at Curtin and three units at Murdoch. There are two clinical practice units in an approved mental health care facility under the preceptorship of a mental health nurse.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to seek employment in many areas of the health care system. In addition graduates of this course may be employed within other work environments such as the justice system. The course will provide nurses with increased knowledge and skills that will facilitate career development and promotional opportunities.
