This course has an emphasis on practical and theoretical occupational health and safety (OHS) skills with a strong mix of science and technical practical and theoretical knowledge in the core discipline areas of risk management, ergonomics, occupationalhygiene as well as occupational health and safety management, compensation and injury management. There is an emphasis on industry based assessment and the development of practical skills. Units are offered in the external mode with a short intensive on campus requirement for development of technical hands-on skills in occupational hygiene and ergonomics as well as to foster opportunities for networking and teamwork. This course attracts students from a wide variety of professions and industries who are OHS practitioners or intending to work in occupational health and safety, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physical education/human movement science graduates, environmental health officers, teachers, engineers, chemists and many other occupations. Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma students may apply for admission into the Master of Occupational Health and Safety.
A bachelor degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary education institution with at least two years work experience. Candidates with degree equivalent qualifications may be considered, particularly if alreadyemployed or experienced in occupational health and safety.

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is four semesters part-time with study principally conducted on an external basis. The practical unit will have a compulsory on-campus component during the semester break (4 days). Full-time study is available if required subject to availability of units.
A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course are:
Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management.
This course consists of core units followed by a selection from a range of optional units. The optional units provide the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of occupational health and safety. All units are offered in Distance Education mode withone unit requiring attendance at an on-campus session of 4 days.
The course is recognised by several professional bodies including the Australian College of Occupational Medicine.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
