Syllabus:

Waves and vibrations - review of simple harmonic motion. Damped simple harmonic motion and non-linear systems. Forced oscillations, transient and steady state terms. Coupled oscillations and normal modes of vibration. Transverse waves, reflection and transmission coefficients. Longitudinal waves. Radiation physics - detection methods, gas filled detectors. ionisation chamber, proportional counter, GM counter, dead time and quenching. Scintillation counters and semiconductor devices [Ge(Li), Si(Li)]. Detection efficiency and energy resolution. Spectroscopy, pulse height analysis, nuclear spectroscopy, application to mineral exploration and medical diagnosis. Measurement statistics. Radioanalytical techniques, use of radioactive tracers in medical imaging,industrial processes and biological studies. Non-destructive elemental analysis using charge particle activation, PIXE, applications to surface concentration and depth profile analysis. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and x-ray diffraction radiation dosimetry. Roentgen, Gray, Sievert, exposure measurement, free air ionization chamber, air wall chambers, thermoluminescent dosimetry, radiation hazards and ICRP recommendations.
