Syllabus:

This unit deals with the concept of genre in relation to culture. Through the analysis of a range of texts, students will explore ways in which genres emerge and become culturally central in specific historical contexts, or are marginalised at other times. For example, the unit might focus on the development of the genres of utopian and dystopian fiction, of gothic forms, of detective fiction or science fiction. In each case the unit will explore the ways in which the meaning-making strategies of thegenre are linked to their cultural contexts.
