This course is based at the Western Australian School of Mines, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and is designed to meet the needs of recent graduates from traditional geology courses who would like to work as mine geologists. This specialist profession spans the fields of geology and mining engineering, and thus requires a unique blend of skills generally not provided by most undergraduate geology programs. Mine geologists are responsible for delineating ore within operating mines, grade control, resourceestimation, and near-mine exploration. The course also acts as a masters preliminary program for students intending to undertake the Master of Science (Mining Geology), but who are currently unable to meet the entrance requirements. It is also suitable for persons who have been employed as geologists in the mining industry for a number of years who wish to update their qualifications.
A bachelor degree from a recognised institution in geology or an allied discipline. Applicants may also be considered on the basis of the relevance and equivalence of their qualifications and experience.
This fee-paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Students should note that excursion expenses may apply to units within this course and are listed in the Curtin Handbook and Calendar.
