This course provides the theoretical foundations and practical applications for managing resources in the field of community, local and family history. Students study the information needs of historical researchers, the wide range of materials with which they work, the organisational skills of indexing, storing and retrieving information (using both manual and automated systems) and effective methods of managing documentary, audio-visual and electronic heritage resources. Working in the area of local studies requires an interest in history, exceptional communication and organisational skills, the ability to network with the local community and a desire to enhance access to resources.
A degree in an appropriate discipline.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study. External study is also available.
This course does not confer eligibility for membership of professional bodies in the areas of librarianship, records management, or archives.
It is expected that graduates are employed in local studies collections in libraries (if they have prior professional qualifications) or in historical associations, family history societies and local authorities. If they have a first degree in a generalist area they may also use the skills developed as a basis for employment in other fields, for example research and administrative positions.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. Reliable and regular internet access is also required. Students may incur a cost for personal internet access.
