The molecular biology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases is one of the most rapidly expanding areas of knowledge. This unit examines bacterial pathogenesis at the molecular level and applications that improve diagnosis, treatment, epidemiological analysis, control and prevention of infectious diseases. Antimicrobial agents have become one of the most important defences against microbial pathogens. This unit examines the action and range of antimicrobial agents and the urgency for finding new compounds. The ominous cloud hanging over the future of antimicrobial chemotherapy is the evolution of resistance to antimicrobial agents. This unit examines the mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and the spread and epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance genes. |
