Syllabus: |
Phase equalibria and simple thermodynamic principles. Two and three component phase diagrams related to petrology. Use of geochemistry in petrogenetic modelling. Element classification and geochemical behaviour. Eh and pH - application to chemical weathering and environmental geochemistry. Geochemistry of ore forming processes and mine drainage. Description, classification and interpretation of igneous rocks. Primary magma formation and emplacement. Processes in magma chambers, magmatic differentiation. Igneous rocks in hand-specimen. Description and interpretation of metamorphic rocks. Chemical equilibrium, mineral reactions, nucleation and porphyroblast growth, deformation and metamorphic fabrics, metamorphic facies. Fluids, migmatites and partial melting. Metamorphic rocks in hand-specimen. |
