In a continually evolving technological multimedia environment, the course develops flexibility and adaptability in approach to design through an emphasis upon transferable skills applied to specialised study. These transferable skills are gained during a multidisciplinary design foundation developing towards emphasis upon visual communication design and finally specialisation in multimedia design. The intellectual breadth of the multimedia design degree is significantly enhanced by continuing study of the theoretical, critical, historical, social and cross-cultural issues of design within the Department of Design in Context program. Course Entry Requirements/PrerequisitesIn addition to meeting the University's entrance requirements applicants may be required to present to the School a comprehensive folio of work and attend, as required, a personal interview with teaching staff. Selection is highly competitive and is based on both matriculation and portfolio presentation. Specific RequirementsSTAT elements considered are E and either V or Q. Recognition of Prior LearningApplications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Duration and AvailabilityThis course is of three years full-time study. While part-time studies are not discouraged, applicants are reminded that these programs make very great demands on students' time outside formal contact hours. A number of units are available in distance education mode. Course OrganisationThe first year introduces students to a range of professional design activities and establishes critical design and communication skills common to all forms of design specialism in second year to help students maximise individual creative abilities and interests. Major studies focus upon visual communication design complemented by introduction to multimedia technologies and processes as they relate to the function of design. The final year of the Bachelor of Arts (Multimedia Design) program provides specialised studies in the application of visual communication design within digital multimedia modes of delivery. Additional Course ExpensesAll students are also required to own or have access to a 35mm single lens reflex camera, either fully manual, or automatic with manual override. The Department strongly recommends that students have access to a computer with software relevant to requirements of the course. Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
