Introduction
This course offers students the opportunity to study, research, write and produce within the related fields of professional writing and practice, cultural studies and creative arts. The course emphasises the relationship between theory and practice and provides disciplinary and interdisciplinary study in Australian and Intercultural Studies, Creative Writing, Culture Studies, Gender Studies, Literary Studies, Professional Writing and Presentation, Publishing Practice, Performance Studies and Theatre Arts. To the value of one semester of coursework and one semester of dissertation work the course enables students to broaden knowledge and skills acquired across a relevant three year Bachelor of Arts program.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Refer to Admission into Honours Degree Programs and Regulations for Honours Degrees (General Information section) of this Handbook. To be eligible for admission to the course students must have completed a three year Bachelor of Arts or a Graduate Diploma in a relevant field, achieved a minimum average of 65 in that course (special attention is given to a strong achievement in the last semesters of study), and developed a focused proposal for research leading to the honours dissertation.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The course is one year full-time duration and is also available on a part-time basis. External study is not available. Work in some areas, for example theatre may require substantial attendance on campus.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
Special Note
Students considering application to the honours program should ensure that their third year of undergraduate study includes units that will provide them with substantial theoretical grounding and some research experience in their chosen area of study.
