300572 v.2 Master of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)

Introduction
This research course develops, through the conduct of a supervised research project, the ability of a suitably qualified candidate to contribute to the knowledge and practice of engineering. At the completion of the assigned project, the candidate submits a written thesis presenting the results of the work and discussing the significance of them for the pertinent field of engineering. The thesis is examined according to the University's Regulations for the Degree of Master (by Research) (refer to the General Information section).

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A recognised degree in science or applied science at honours level in a field which provides a suitable basis for research related to engineering. Other applications will be considered from other well qualified graduates who are able to present acceptable evidence of their ability to undertake research projects. In such cases, admission may be subject to successful completion of a prescribed qualifying program.

Duration and Availability
The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time study. The course is also available in part-time mode.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note
The topic for the research project is assigned to the candidate after consultation with the Head of Department. Students who are admitted subject to successful completion of a qualifying program will enrol in one or both of the Masters Qualifying Program units and undertake a specified program of study. On successful completion students will qualify to proceed with the formal masters program. Failure to attain a satisfactory standard in the qualifying units will render a student ineligible for re -enrolment in the masters program. It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive a related Postgraduate Diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
