300567 v.2 Master of Science (Mining Engineering)

Introduction
This course develops in-depth enquiry, a mastery of research methodology, and the ability to communicate research work and project and its findings. This is achieved by attendance at seminars and group discussions, the preparation and submission of a thesis based research project and, if necessary, an oral defence of the thesis. Students carry out research work, either in the laboratories of the institution or in industry, on projects in the general field of mining and mineral technology.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Four year undergraduate degree, with the award of a bachelors degree in engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree with honours, or equivalent, in an appropriate field and at a better than average level of performance.Applicants with other qualifications and experience may only be admitted with the consent of the Senior Academic.

Duration and Availability
If studied on a full-time basis, the course extends over a minimum period of one calendar year, whereas part-time students will take at least two years to complete the course.

Course Organisation
The course includes both coursework units (at least two in any one year) and project units (no more than one per semester). Coursework can be selected from the units offered in the final two years of the Bachelor of Engineering course and/or the GraduateDiploma or Graduate Certificate courses at the Western Australian School of Mines, excluding any taken in previous studies. It is envisaged that students would select a coursework unit or mix of units appropriate to their career aspirations. Project units take the form of appropriate projects which could involve both field and laboratory work related to the student's specilised area of study. Students are required to submit a written report or dissertation.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
