| Syllabus: | This unit includes the study of prokaryotic cell structure and function with a focus on understanding the virulence properties of bacteria (including mechanisms of antibiotic resistance) and the influence these factors can have on the pathogenesis of infectious disease. The concept of the dynamic interrelationship between the human host’s defence mechanisms and the pathogenesis of microbial disease is introduced using examples of specific bacteria and viruses. The clinical diagnostic cycle for identifying microbial pathogens includes the collection of appropriate human clinical specimens, the laboratory processing of the specimens, the cultivation and/or taxonomic identification of pathogens and the susceptibility testing of medically important bacteria. This unit not only introduces each of these principles but also covers the important topic of antibiotic therapy including the mode of action of various antibiotics as well as the epidemiological basis for monitoring and controlling infectious diseases. |
