| UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
| Syllabus: | Surveyors and other spatial scientists must always provide an assessment of the reliability of their observations and measurements, typically presented via accuracy, precision and error estimates. This unit provides the student with the tools required for such data analysis. The lectures introduce methods for quantitatively summarising large data sets of distance and angular observations. The distinction between accuracy and precision is then explored, and geostatistical tools are provided for determining the reliability of these parameters in a robust manner that would satisfy a client. The concept of modelling data is explored, once again enabling the summary of large spatial data sets. This leads, finally, to a treatment of the various error types that most commonly occur in surveying and spatial data. |
